Разыскиваю сведения о своей прапрабабушке. Знаю только ее имя FANNY. Около 1880 года она развелась с моим пра2дедом, с которым пробыла в браке около 5 лет, проживая в Гайсине. Вскоре после этого она вышла замуж повторно за MAX SWARTZSTEIN, уехала жить с ним в Терновку, где у них родился как минимум один ребенок - сын JOSEPH".

Совершенно верно, дорогая Елена! Шмуль/Samuel, 1869-1870 г.р., был первым сыном Фейги от Палти Киблицкого, именно он выехал в США и положил начало ветви Нэнси. Вспомним об этом фрагменте корабельного манифеста:

Строка 11: "Иосиф Шварцштейн, 22 года, уроженец Терновки, в 1905 году прибыл из России в США. Встречающее лицо - Сэм Киблицкий (кузен)".

Кроме того, у Фейги и Палти обнаружился второй сын, умерший в раннем возрасте, о чем я сообщил Вам вчера - Нэнси еще не в курсе, кстати.

28 июня 1872 года в семье Гайсинского 2 гильдии купеческого сына Палти Киблицкого и его жены Фейги родился сын Аврум-Нахман, умерший в Гайсине 13 августа 1874 года.

Елена, возможно у Вас уже это есть, но все же. Взялся листать ДАХмО 227-2-13025 "Про утверждение раввинов и членов правления молитвенных школ по Гайсину и уезду в 1877 году". И на стр. 14-15 (так в Adobe Acrobat) обнаружил "Общественный приговор" евреев Терновки об утверждении того самого правления местных синагоги и школы. Среди подписантов - Овшей Шварцштейн и Зейлик Шварцштейн.

Hi everyone! I write to you from Argentina. Trying to find information on my ancestors. They where Schwarzsteins from Polonnoe and Ljubar. My grandfather was named Pinkas. My great-grandfather was named Salomon. He married Fanny Kantor whom we suspect was killed in the 1919 pogrom of Polonnoe. My great-great grandfather was named Getze Ellis. He was brother to Berko, who had a jewelry business in Berdichev and Odessa. My grandfather Pinkas arrived in Argentina in the twenties and for a short while they lived in the jewish colony of Moises ville. Am I related to you in anyway? Any ideas on how could I find more about Fanny and the rest of my ancestors? Thank you so much. It is amazing to see my last name in russian.

We represent a group of people who believe we are descendants of Munish Shvarts-shtein and Tema Cohn of Ternovka. We are each descended from different offspring of Munish and Tema.

Lea/Leah/Lizzie Schwartzstein Dickler (1852-1925)
Shlema/Solomon/Sam Schwartzstein Schwartz (1862-1952)
Ios/Joseph Schwarzman Schwartz (1868-1921)

The three each emigrated separately, eventually settling in the United States, between 1880-1910. Their descendants had no information about their origins or their families, either parents or siblings. We first identified the potential connection between Lizzie, Sam and Joseph through a significant, consistent series of DNA matches between their descendants: the great-grandchildren of each matched the great-grandchildren of the other two as 3rd cousins. As we gathered more DNA evidence, the case strengthened. We even located "missing" family members, unknown descendants in our own family trees, through this process; their DNA matches to the known Schwartzstein cohort pointing to a family connection which had been lost.

To support the DNA evidence, we gathered and collated scant historical records. For instance, at some point, Lizzie, Sam and Joseph reported their parents' names to be Manis/Munish/Emanuel and Tamy/Tema/Thelma. Other records pointed to Ternovka (in one form or another) as their original home town. Last fall, we engaged Dr. Adina Newman, a genetic genealogist, to review the evidence we collected. She was able to locate additional supporting records and, with the records and DNA matches we'd already assembled, she concluded that Lizzie, Sam and Joseph were very likely siblings, children of Munish Schwartzstein and Tema Cohen of Ternivka.

In the past month, we engaged two researchers who found corresponding records for Shvarts-shtein family members in Ternikva documenting, in part, that Sam (Shlema) and Joseph (Ios) were indeed brothers, the sons of Munish. We haven't found documentation showing Lizzie/Lea's connection yet. We believe she had already married Samuel (Shmuel) Dickler by the time of the 1875 census and no Dickler (Dischler) have been identified so far. Besides, women were not routinely recorded. The 1875 census and 1904 tax records fill out the family tree significantly. We now have the names of at least two more brothers to Leah, Sam and Joseph, plus three of Munish's brothers, as well as their father – Nukhim – and grandfather – Faivish. We are sorting through entries in this forum and looking to other trees to see if we can trace the family even further.

We would like to identify as many descendants of the Shvarts-shtein/Schwartzstein family as possible. We have fairly complete – but not quite – documentation of the descendants of Leah, Sam and Joseph. We know almost nothing about their siblings and their descendants. We're particularly interested in placing missing female family members in the tree. We'd appreciate hearing from others tracing their lineage from Munish, Nukhim or Faivish. If you have taken DNA test, this would be very helpful to know. We have cohorts of Schwartzsteins with DNA tests at FTDNA, 23andme, MyHeritage, Ancestry and GEDMatch. There is a "Schwartz Schwartzstein" ancestor project at GEDMatch we encourage you to join. Any other tips or suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.

I wanted to provide a bit more detail about my family. As mentioned earlier, I'm the great-grandson of Joseph Schwartz. Joseph reported he was born in 1868 or -9 in "Russia," emigrated to the US in 1885 or -8. He married Tillie Weinblot/Weinblatt, another emigre from Russia, in New York in 1893. On the marriage record, Joseph listed his name as Joseph Schwarzman and his parents' names as Tamy Cohn and Manis Schwarzman. Joseph and Tillie had 4 children: Harry (1894-1924), Herman Joseph (1895-1961), Leo (1899-1944) and Thelma (1906-1969). The first 2 were born in Brooklyn NY and the last 2 in Perth Amboy NJ where the family appears (in various configurations) in the 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 US census rolls. They also appear in the Perth Amboy city directories and many news and society page items in the Perth Amboy Evening News during that period. Joseph was a candidate for office 3 times on the Socialist Party ticket and was active in the Hebrew Progressive Society and Workman's Circle. Sons Harry and Leo were stars of the local semi-pro basketball league. Herman was more notable for scrapes with the law, until he enlisted in the US Army and served with distinction in Europe during WW I. Joseph died in 1921 and Tillie in 1933. They were buried in the Hebrew Progressive Cemetery (now Beth Mordecai) in Perth Amboy. Joseph's inscription reads יוסף בר מאניש (Yosef bar Manish).

Until the last year or so, all I knew of Joseph's origins were the names of his parents on his marriage record, complemented by the gravestone inscription. I had not found any immigration records under the names Joseph Schwartz or Schwarzman which matched my great-grandfather. A few years ago I began receiving hints from genealogy sites linking Joseph to another family by the name of Schwartzstein, with a brother Samuel and father Emanuel. I was able to find found 2 passenger records using the name Josef Schwarzstein, one arriving in 1885 and another in 1890, both from Ternivka. But I still had no solid evidence that my Joseph was a Schwartzstein. The hints became more compelling after I took DNA tests and found significant matches with Samuel's descendants. About a year ago, I was contacted by a descendant of Leah Schwartzstein who found me because of a strong DNA match. Leah's descendants matched Samuel's as well as my family. As we expanded the cohort of DNA tests (39 individuals) and compared records, the link between Joseph, Samuel and Leah suggested they were siblings, that their parents were Manish/Emanuel Schwartzstein and Tema/Thelma Cohn, residents of Ternivka, Ukraine. Within the last couple months he obtained a set of records, primarily from the 1875 census, which include an entry for Munish Shvarts-shtein with sons Shlema (Samuel's Hebrew name) and Ios (a common nickname for Yosef), whose dates of birth align with Samuel and Joseph. Thanks to those records, we have not only additional evidence linking Samuel and Joseph, but names of 2 (or 3?) siblings, their father, grandfather and great-grandfather, plus a host of members of our newly-discovered extended family. We don't yet have evidence for Leah's place in the family or in Ternivka and ask for any assistance you can provide. We're excited to expand our understanding of these recent finds and fill out our previously-truncated trees. And happy to share what information we have about our branches. A combined tree on Ancestry is private (since it was tentative and speculative) but we will share it with individuals on request. In the meantime, of the next generation, the oldest son Harry married Jennie Daitz and they had a daughter Mildred (1916-1960). Harry and Jennie divorced and Harry married Diana Schwartzstein in 1920. (We believe Diana was Harry's 1st cousin, the daughter of Joseph's brother Samuel.) Harry and Diana had a son, Joseph Harry (1922-1980). Harry was killed in an accident in 1924 and is buried near his parents. Herman married 2x; no children. He moved to Los Angeles CA, had an insurance agency, may have used the name Black, and passed away in 1961. He is buried in Ft. Rosencrans Nat'l Cemetery in San Diego, CA.

Leo Schwartz is my grandfather. He married Edith Joroff in 1923. Edith was born in Snvosk Ukraine and emigrated in 1905 at the age of 4 with her mother and older brother. Leo and Edith moved to Atlantic City NJ where they started a wholesale grocery business with Edith's parents. They had two children, June and Nancy (my mother). Leo died in 1944 and Edith in 1966. They are buried in Rodef Shalom Cemetery in Atlantic County, NJ.

Thelma married James Hayden in the 1930s and relocated to Hawaii in 1941. Thelma had a daughter, Judith Melenalani Hayden in 1947. Thelma died in 1969 and Judy passed away in 2006.

I know of only 8 living descendants of Joseph Schwartz: my mother, my two brothers, my niece and myself, Mildred Schwartz's son, and Joseph Harry's two sons.
