Фиш Исаак Ушерович was born in 1910. His father Usher may be Oser, i.e. widow of Nesia.

There is almost always a combination of fact and later-time legend in these family tales, and sometimes it is important to separate the two for a more efficient search. Universities in Russia were semi-open to the Jews (with quotas, limitations, and tuition costs). In my family, only my great-grandfather graduated from a university in the Czarist times. But lists of students of all major Russian universities, even in the XIX century, have large numbers of Jews.
Many school applications to Russian universities, even rejected ones, are preserved in the archives, and sometimes one can find extensive genealogy details in these applications.
Harvard wasn't particularly famous before WWI, especially among Jews, but as I just learned, Harvard didn't start limiting Jewish admissions until about 1922 (when 21% of its students were Jewish). But among the Jewish immigrants, other colleges were much more famous (in New York's, Hunter and City colleges were majority-Jewish, Columbia University was very popular, and Cooper Union was REALLY famous because it offered free tuition; my great grand uncle studied at Cooper Union). It is possible that your ancestor was trying to go to Columbia, and his wish was fulfilled later when his descendant went to Harvard...
Interesting comment. I'll talk to my uncle Oscar, let's see what he thinks. Maybe he remembers something else.

Yes, I know that family! It's Max Morogovsky's. He administers a tree in Geni. We exchanged a lot of data with him for years, but we still don't know if he and I are relatives. I think so, but I can not prove it. There is not enough evidence. I suppose that my grandfather's half-brothers were evacuated before the Nazi occupation. My family never spoke about Ukrainian relatives killed by the nazis. But in Max's family there are Shoah victims. On the other hand, Max is not sure that his ancestors lived in Dobroye. What he knows, is that they were from "Bashtanka". A region, not a town. According to Yad Vashem, they were from Dobroye, yes, but I insist: My grandfather's half-brothers never mentioned any murder. Only the war (but what? The first or the second?).

Thanks, I'll talk to him. The Permans: To my country came one Schachne Ruchel Svetlitza (Raquel), married in Kherson (the region) with Yankel Chaim Perman (1890-1965). She was born in Novopoltavka in 1888 and died in Buenos Aires in 1980. Raquel was the daughter of a Nikolaiev merchant: Khanina Svetlitza (aka Janine), who had a bazaar in that city. (According to the legend, of course!) She came to Argentina around 1904, with several brothers. Each one with their respective family. Some of them were from Efingar (with the Alchulers). One was from Kiev (!). Let's say they were scattered here and there. And when they came here, they did the same thing: they dispersed.

Raquel had a suspicious resemblance to my brother Pablo:

But I can't prove that Janine was connected with my great-grandmother Nesia either. It is a "work hypothesis".

You don't give up, right? :-D

I've been researching for years. Thanks to my research, I found a lot of distant relatives. Even a third cousin of 92 years, half crazy. But none of them knows anything. In the worst case, they are not interested in the family past at all. I already contacted too many distant relatives. I don't need more, Helen. What I need is information. Data. Like what you are giving me here. Maybe one day I will do the DNA test, but not now. I hope you understand me.

Имя: Иосиф Фиш;
Профессия: фермер, полевой рабочий;
Религия: еврей;
Национальность: русский;

José Fisch.

Interesting family name Svetlitsa. If the family came from Lithuania (quite possible), the family name, possibly changed. It can be the changed family name or, possibly, changed town name from Lithuania. What bender dictionary says?

Thanks for your Russian translation, anno_nin. Yes, that's a line that I investigate: Lithuania. My uncles insist that Nesia was of Lithuanian origin. And I already said that Dobroye was divided between Poles and Lithuanians. Historical documents say that an Yiddish with a strong Polish accent was spoken in Dobroye. Remember that Poland and Lithuania are neighboring countries.

You're right in mentioning the subject of the surname changes. Lithuania has a special grammar for surnames. For example: Here, in my country, is the Berenzon clan, which in Lithuania was called Berensonas. And I've seen Lithuanian Fischs surnamed Fisas and Fishaite!

I also study the origin of the surname Svetlitza, for years. It is not easy. The obvious hypothesis is that it derives from the classic illuminated room, popularized in the remote days of Kievan Rus'.

That word (room illuminated, etc.) would have become the name of multiple places throughout the Russian Empire (I have about 10). And then it became a toponymic surname. Well, one of the so-called sites is in Lithuania:

https://ar.utc.city/3281585

Note the closeness to Poland. "Svetlica" means illuminated room in Polish.

A detail: The Swetlitz / Svetlitzin clan of Latvia arise in Belarus, from a village now extinct called Svetlits, near Minsk.

As a toponym, the surname is carried by independent families, since there were and there are many places called Svetlitsa or similar. For example, there are the Hungarian Svetlitzas, very old. And Christians!

But I have another hypothesis, more daring. Everything originates in the old Middle English word "swetlich". Today it does not exist. It was part of the Christian medieval liturgy. It alludes to the Jesus's sweetness; his sweet way of being.

The path from that word to the surname is long and confused, as is natural. I suppose that in Luxenburg it was transformed into Swetlitz, a surname better known than Svetlitza. Casually, many Argentine Svetlitzas (descendants of Jewish-Ukrainians) changed their surname to Svetlith, which sounds the same as Swetlitz.

Conjecture: The name Svetlitz / Swetlitz passed from the Germanic world to Slavic world (say: from the west to the east of Europe) and then it was assimilated to words of Slavic origin, where Svet* no longer refers to Swet / Sweet, but to Light.

If that is true, the following is possible: 1. Central European settlers surnamed Swetlich or Svetlitz arrive in Lithuania; 2. They settle there, they are nationalized as Lithuanians. 3. In the civil registry (or whatever there was then), their last names are submitted to the Lithuanian grammar for names: An "a" is added to the end of their surnames. And so, through these turns of life, the Jesus's sweetness is transformed into an illuminated room. :wink:

Transformed or... retransformed. Because the illuminated rooms of the old bourgeois houses in Russia (and surrounding areas) were not simple illuminated rooms. In these there was an icon, in a sacred corner. A human figure haloed by a circular aura. That figure could be the Virgin Mary with the child Jesus, any saint of the Orthodox world, or even someone of the old nobility, who was somehow divinized. I suspect that first it was the "illuminated person" (that is, the religious icon), and then, by metonymy, the word in question came to refer to the illuminated room: the place where that icon was worshiped. That would explain why there are so many places called Svetlitza. The reason would be religious. It's rare that a town is called Illuminated Room. But it's normal to be called Illuminated Person.

Why not? One possibility does not exclude the other, of course. On the contrary: they complement each other.

Sorry my english. I never got the first certificate. :hi:

Thank you, but with that I've only learned that there is another site called Svetlitza. Another one! In this case, Świetlica, in Poland, very close to Lithuania.

According to this site:

http://www.ldorvdor.net/names_origin.html

"Svetlits (Lyutsin) T: from the village Svetlitsa (Pinsk district)". But no, it's not Pinsk, it's Minsk! That village was swept from the face of the earth. That is Belarus. Lyutsin = Ludza. The first Svetlits in Ludza signed as Svetlitzin / Swetlitsin. Later they changed to Swetlitz. That clan spread all over the world: USA, Canada, England, Germany, Israel ... Most of them settled in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, a century ago. They hired a professional genealogist to build their family tree. Source: Myron Swetlitz (Ludza->USA).

Some Svetlitzin from Latvia migrated to Ukraine, but that was after my great-grandmother's days. That variant of the surname is not as exotic as it seems. There is a Dostoyevsky character with that surname.

Anyway, we'll see.
