Hello,
My name is Elliott Terman. I am 75 years old. I have been involved in genealogy since the late 1980's - early 1990's.
One of my greatest disappointments in my efforts is not being able to find my grandfather, beyond the borders of the US. Following is a narrative using the facts I have been able to glean from the information online and through limited research in the Church of LDS libraries. I joined this group in hopes that through you kind folks I could be more successful.
Pesach Taratut: (b. 18 Jul 1877 - d. 22 Jan 1953) US name, Philip Terman:
Father's name "Leon", possibly Leib. Mother's name is unknown.
Oral history says that a "Shabbas Goy", employed by the family, told the Russian officials about Pesach. It is most likely that he was induced into army at 13 years old in 1890. He was gone from Russia/Ukraine and in the US by March, 1904.
His Petition for Naturalization, filed October 9, 1914, stated that he came from Podolsk / Podolia (Podolsk) -- [Russian gubernia, 1796-1917, in Pale of Settlement. Today, southwestern Ukraine - Volyn-Podolsk, plateau extending between the Dniester and upper Bug River valleys - Capital: Kamenetz-Podolsk], his family was told that he came from Bugapol ("near the Bug River"), which is in Ukraine. It could have been Mogliev-Podolski, but, it is more likely that he was from Kamenetz-Podolsk
He met and married Fanny (Feige Ioseleva Shimonovsky - from her passport application in Mir) Simon, possibly while still in the Russian Army, in 1901. They lived in Mir, Belarus. He left his wife and daughter Rebecca (Riwke) to go to the New York, in 1904. He traveled from Hamburg, Germany, leaving on 26 Feb1904 (the ship stopped in Boulogne, France and Plymouth, England) and arriving In New York on March 10, 1904, aboard the SS Graf Waldersee (Hamburg-Amerika Line).
According to his Declaration of Intention, his name was "Persach Taratook". The Hamburg Passenger List has him as "Peisach Taratus" and "Taratus Peisach". He was listed on the Graf Waldersee Passenger Manifest as "Peisch Taratuch". It is speculated that his real name was Terman, but due to probability that he deserted from the Russian Army to go to America, he disguised his identity by taking the name Taratut or Taratook. He worked to make enough money to send for Fanny and Rebecca. They came to the US as Taratut, in 1907. At that point, Philip was living at 92 Canal Street, NYC.
Philip was listed as a member of Mirer Young Mens' Benevolent and Educational Society, a socialistically oriented landsman fraternity from 1910. He was sponsored by M. Sandler. He was listed in the 35th Anniversary Young Mens Chevra Kadeshe Society membership (1940).
On August 19, 1909, the family was living at 342 Sheffield Avenue, Brooklyn, NY, where Nathan was born.
On April 18th, 1910, according to the 1910 Census, the family lived at 180 Sackman Street, Brooklyn, New York (presently, an empty lot off East New York Avenue, Brooklyn). Rebecca was 7, George was 2, and Nathan was 8 months. His occupation was listed as "Cap Maker". Jake Simon (24 yrs, born 1883, emigrated 1904) and Morris Kinervitch (24 yrs, born 1883, emergrated 1907) were living with them as boarders.
His Declaration of Intention to become a citizen was made on September 23, 1911. At that time he lived at 48 Clinton Street, New York City, NY (the building still stands - between Rivington and Stanton Sts, near the Brooklyn Bridge). The family lived at 291 Ashford Street, Brooklyn, NY in 1913 when Barnet was born. His Petition for Naturalization was made on October 9, 1914. He was naturalized on February 9, 1915. At that time, he and his family lived at 620 East 11th Street, NYC, NY (the building still stands - 2 blocks from Tompkins Square Park). [Eleanor Roosevelt lived at 20 East 11 St] The family is noted in the 1915 census as TERMIN (Philip, Fannie, "Becky", George, Nathan and "Benny") - E. D. #2, A. D. #12. Philip is listed as a Hat Maker.
Between 1917 and 1918, there is a listing in the Passaic, NJ telephone book for Philip Terman, Capmaker at 82 Hope Avenue.
On Sept 12, 1918, when registering for the WW I draft, they lived at 1143 Oxford Street, Woodhaven, Queens, NY. He was working for Spear & Co. as a Cap Maker. His Draft card was #2195.
The family is noted in the 1925 census living at 97-42 102 Street, Ozone Park, NY. Block #16, A.D. #05, E. D. #3, Ward #4. Phiilp is noted as being naturalized in 1913 (Cap Maker). Betty is listed as a Stenographer on ths census.
In April 1942, while living at 97-42 102 St., Ozone Park, NY (Tel. # Wi 7-0404) and working for Stein Bros. 889 Sutter Ave, Bklyn, NY as a cap maker he signed for the WW II draft. Card #U293. Arthur Simon, daughter Betty's husband, accompanied him.
He applied for a replacement Certificate of Citizenship on February 29, 1948, because the original was torn, or very worn; possibly lost. At that time he still lived with his family at 97-42 102 Street, Ozone Park, Queens, NY.
He was active in Union affairs, and was quite often asked to speak at union rallies. He was a "powerful" speaker. Strangely named individuals often came to the house. One stands out because he was called "The Flea". It was also noted that a cousin named Charney was a frequent visitor. It was quite possible that he was a member of the United Cloth Hat and Cap Makers of North America Union.
Garlick's Funeral Parlor, at 367 Grand St., NYC was used by the family to lay him to rest. The service was held at 2 PM on January 23, 1953. His sons dug the grave as there was a Gravediggers Union Strike at the time.
Any help, guidance and or advice is welcome.
Thank you,
