My paternal grandmother, Fany GENDLER/GUENDLER/HENDLER, born Nov. 18, 1902, came to Argentina 1918-1919.Her father was Israel Gendler and her mother LEA SVATETZ. Israel Gendler married twice and Fany and Mary were borned from second marriage. There was another sister (half- sister) who come to USA.

Fany first tried to go to the US, but was rejected because she had vision problems, so she went to Palacio, Monigotes, Argentina, because there was already a Jewish colony there. Her sister Mary was able to enter the US, where she stayed. She married Harry HALPERN. They had no children. I think she was from Ukraine. Fany said she was Polish. Fany chose Palacio because she already had an uncle Jose (Joseph) SVATETZ who later moved to Chaco province, where he had a pharmacy. Fany died on Nov. 15, 1980, in Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina. Her death certificate says she was born in “Russia, Ukraine”.

My grandparents met in Palacio and married in 1924 or 1925, but there is no marriage record.

I have all the dates of birth their death certificates, but not much else. I have posted before, I’ve registered my surnames. I’ve written to many general archives in Moldova and Argentina. I can’t find either Fany or Maria GUENDLER/GENDLER/HENDLER in the Ellis Island database (using Steve Morse’s gold form).

I would love to hear from you if any of these people are in your family tree. I would also welcome suggestions for more research.

Мать моего отца, Фаня Гендлер, родилась 18 ноября 1902 и прибыла в Аргентину в 1918-1919. Starokostiantyniv (Ukrainian: Старокостянтинів; Polish: Starokonstantynów, or Konstantynów; Yiddish: אלט-קאָנסטאַנטין‎ Alt Konstantin) is a city in the Khmelnytskyi Oblast (province) of western Ukraine. Serving as the administrative center of the Starokostiantyniv Raion (district), the city itself is also designated as a separate raion within the oblast. The city has a population of 34,700 (2007).

According to the Svatetz family name district You can start your research from Khmelnitsky (former Proskurov district). It was Polish and Ukrainian in the different periods of it's history.

There is another subject here with surname Handler from Ukraine where the relatives emigrated to America.

I knew that my grandmother Fany Gendler probably was born in Polonoye.

There was no direct emigration from Ukraine to the Americas in those years. And the area was in the bloody Civil War. Most Western Ukrainian Jews first crossed illegally into Romania, and then obtained passports from the old Russian government consulate in Bucharest. Very few people traveled to Romanian border before 1920 because it was unsafe because of the Civil War.
But if your Gendler ancestors lived in Soroki (which was part of Romania in 1918-1919), then they could have traveled with Romanian passports.

The only interesting record I see for Gendler in Volynia Gubernia (at JRI Poland DB) is the family of Pinkhus Gendler(from Dubno) and Mirlya, born Zak(from Kremenetz). They have (among their dozens of children) a son Srul (Israel), born in Kremenetz, Febr 07 1873.
